Please visit this chart to review scholarship eligibility:  Scholarship eligibility chart

If you are a medical student (MSI, MSII, MSIII, MSIV) at a US-based school outside of the FMEC’s 14 state region, you are not eligible for a scholarship.  You will need to pay the student registration rate to attend the meeting. Individual registration will open in the spring of 2024.

If you are a medical student at an international medical school, you are not eligible to register but may be eligible for a scholarship depending on your school. Contact Jennifer Stamper at [email protected] to inquire.

FMEC Student Scholarship Program

The FMEC inspires students to seek careers in family medicine. Medical students first attended the FMEC Annual Meeting in 1992, through an initiative started by Dr. Nik Zervanos. Since then, the FMEC has provided more than 7,000 scholarships. Students attending our meeting increase their interest in family medicine and primary care, get experience presenting posters, and often apply to family medicine residency programs they meet at the meeting’s Residency Fair.

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • If you are a medical student in the FMEC 14 state region, you are eligible for a scholarship.
  • You must be an MSI, MSII, MSIII or MSIV to apply.
  • If you are not in the FMEC region but at a US-based school, you must pay the student registration fee to attend.  Please go here to register.
  • If you are at an International Medical School that currently has a partnership with the FMEC, you are eligible for a scholarship. These schools include:  American University of the Caribbean, St. Matthew's University School of Medicine, St. George's University School of Medicine and Ross University School of Medicine.
  • If you are at an International Medical School not listed above, please contact Jennifer Stamper at [email protected]
  • If you have completed medical school but not entered a residency, you are eligible to register but only if you have good standing as an AAFP Transitional Member. If you are a Transitional Member of the AAFP, you must pay the student registration fee to attend.  Please go here to register.

Each scholarship includes:

  • FMEC membership for one year
  • Annual Meeting registration fee
  • All conference-provided meals and breaks
  • Two (2) nights in the hotel (double bedded room shared with another scholarship student)
  • Admittance to Residency Fair and all academic programming
  • One-on-one support from the FMEC Student Coordinator
  • A pre-meeting orientation and Q&A session to prepare you for the meeting

The FMEC relies on the generosity of our members and institutions throughout the country to provide funds so we can bring 300 students to the meeting each year. Please donate today to support FMEC student scholarships – any amount is appreciated!

What to know

  • The scholarship application fee is $25.00 (non-refundable) which includes a one-year membership in the FMEC.
  • Access to scholarships is a benefit for medical schools who maintain an organizational Partnership in the FMEC. Medical students receive priority for scholarships when their medical schools have joined the FMEC as a Partner at the Bronze level or higher.
  • If your school is not an FMEC Partner, but you are in the FMEC region, you should still apply. The FMEC will connect with your medical school leadership to explain the benefits of FMEC membership.
