Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Course (8:00am - 5:00pm)
Faculty
Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI)

Registration deadline: September 10, 2026 - NO ON SITE REGISTRATIONS
Registration Fees:
Physicians/Healthcare Professionals: FMEC Member $850/Non-Member $900
Residents/Fellows: FMEC Member $850/Non-Member $900
Students: n/a (students should not attend)

Course Overview: Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is rapidly becoming a standard of care for clinicians and the fifth pillar of physical examination. POCUS has the power to transform bedside diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and procedures for family medicine. But training is essential for clinicians who want to become confident, competent POCUS practitioners. The FMEC is collaborating with the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI), founded by family physicians, to offer this preconference and meet this critical need. With significant hands-on experience, the preconference will cover POCUS basics as well as a selection of specific techniques: gall bladder, abdominal aortic aneurysm, cardiac echo, lung, deep venous thrombosis, and musculoskeletal. All registered participants will receive 3 months of access to the GUSI learning platform, including POCUS Essentials, Pediatric Essentials, and MSK Essentials, which is valued at over $700. This session is geared toward family medicine faculty.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Have POCUS skills that will allow them to improve clinical outcomes, facilitate more rapid diagnoses, shorten time to definitive treatment, reduce failure and complication rates during procedures, and improve patient satisfaction.
  • Begin to develop a curriculum and become faculty for POCUS in their family medicine residency program.
  • Work toward credentialing and privileging in the use of POCUS at their home institution.

IMPLICIT Network Meeting (12:00pm - 5:00pm)
Faculty
Mario DeMarco, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Clinical Family Medicine and Community Health, Director of Family Medicine Obstetrics, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Pennsylvania
Anna Fetterolf, Project Manager, Research Institute, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health
Other faculty to be announced

Registration Fees:
This meeting is intended for IMPLICIT Network site representatives only, and sites intending to join IMPLICIT.
Physicians/Healthcare Professionals: $0
Residents/Fellows: $0
Students: $0

Course Overview: IMPLICIT Network is a learning collaborative that works with primary care practices to implement two standard of care models, 4th Trimester (4TM) and Interconception Care (ICC). Both are evidence-based approaches to improve perinatal, maternal, and newborn health. The ICC model screens mothers/birthing people during well-child visits from 0-24 months and address maternal risks such as tobacco use, maternal depression, family planning, and multivitamin with folic acid intake. The 4TM model works to identify maternal risks sooner, provide appropriate resources and have scheduled all mothers/birthing people for an early postpartum visit within 3 weeks of giving birth. This network meeting will provide maternal health educational opportunities and quality improvement instruction for IMPLICIT Network sites. Intended for IMPLICIT Network sites and those interested in joining only.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Implement clinic/program-wide screening of mothers/birthing people for risks such as tobacco use, maternal depression, family planning, folic acid intake.
  • Screen families for unmet contraceptive needs during the first 24 months following childbirth.
  • Address psychosocial and biomedical risk factors that impact birth outcomes and postpartum health, implement early postpartum visits, and identify resource needs for perinatal birthing people.
  • Conduct data collection and continuing quality improvement across clinic site(s) with regard to interconception care and 4th trimester care.

Master the FACTS of the Female Cycle (6:00pm - 9:00pm)
Faculty:
Marguerite Duane, MD, MHA, MSPH, Course Director, Facts About Fertility
Luis Garcia, MD
Sophie Saab-Tsnobiladze, MD
Kelly Weiss, DO, MS, Resident, UPMC Pinnacle Lititz

Registration Fees:
Physicians/Healthcare Professionals: $125
Residents/Fellows: $100
Students: $75

Course Overview: A woman’s cycle is a carefully orchestrated series of internal hormonal changes which produce observable external signs or biomarkers that women can learn to chart to better monitor her reproductive health. Charts of the female cycle can reveal a normally functioning reproductive health system or one that may be affected by stress, illness or other factors, serving as a valuable “5th vital sign.” We will discuss the science behind fertility charting and review a variety of charts, including apps, indicating a woman’s health status, possible differential diagnoses and potential management options based on what the chart shows.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define FABMs, and the signs or biomarkers of the female cycle that women may learn to reliably observe and chart
  • Outline the normal parameters of the cycle, including the peak day and methods women may use to chart their cycles
  • Describe the hormonal events of the female cycle that result in the observable physiologic biomarkers
  • Review a sample of female cycle charts that may indicate potential underlying health issues
  • State other opportunities to learn how to address women’s health issues using fertility charts
