The Future of Family Medicine Report calls for the redesign of Family Medicine offices into Patient Centered Medical Homes for all people. Of particular consideration is redesign to meet the needs of people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. This project supports the FMEC’s effort to increase the number of Family Physicians able to respond to the needs of children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.
Program Goals
This program will:
1) Consider how to redesign Family Medicine Medical Homes so they offer continuous and compassionate care to individuals and families with special needs;
2) Create linkages between Family Medicine Medical Homes and the service and advocacy organizations in their respective communities;
3) Explore curricular models that will improve the ability of medical students’ and Family Medicine residents’ and fellows’ to respond to people with disabilities;
4) Showcase this effort to those in Family Medicine and the service and advocacy communities in the northeast region who are seeking models to improve health services for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities;
5) Reach out to interested family members and lay groups in the northeast region of the US who want to learn how to improve health promotion and medical services for people with special needs.
