We are pleased to offer this award to Doug Knutson, MD. The following material presents excerpts from his letter of nomination.
Dr. Knutson is a faculty member in The Ohio State University Department of Family Medicine. He has quite an impressive array of books, published articles and professional presentations which demonstrate the significant contributions he has made to the field of family medicine. From a numbers perspective, his writings include: two chapters in edited books, eleven peer-reviewed publications, one published abstract and twenty-one papers in proceedings. In addition, Dr. Knutson has two first-author manuscripts under review at the current time. To support his research and scholarship, Dr. Knutson has secured two grant projects as Principal Investigator and four grant projects as Co-Investigator - he has one application pending on which he is the proposed Principal Investigator.
As part of a federally-funded training grant project focused on medical student education, Dr. Knutson led a team of content and technical personnel to develop The Physical Examination, distance learning materials designed to be delivered either as a stand-alone CD-ROM or via the internet. This course offers eight interactive learning modules. Each module uses multiple visual and aural technology features to bring to life the basic anatomy and physiology relevant to the physical examination. Once the anatomy and physiology in each module are mastered, students learn the physical examination techniques appropriate to each system. This sequence is designed to maximize learning.
Dr. Knutson's early career focus has been on the education and training of future physicians, both medical students and residents. A number of indicators, namely awards and formal recognition of his teaching ability, exist to demonstrate the value placed in Dr. Knutson's contributions to the Department and the College. These include:
- September, 2000 - Ohio State Department of Family Medicine SOAR Award
- August, 2001 - Outstanding Teaching Award for the Problem-Based Learning Program at Ohio State
- May, 2002 - Department of Family Medicine's Excellence in Training Award
- June, 2003 - Department of Family Medicine's Residency Program's Family Physicians Teacher of the Year
- May, 2004 - Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health's Distinguished Educator Award
- June, 2004 - Department of Family Medicine Residency Program's Family Physician of the Year Award
Dr. Knutson's research and scholarly work relate to the use of innovative medical education methods and techniques. His major focus involves bringing clinical realism to medical education in the pre-clinical years, through the use of computer simulations, cases and more recently, standardized patients. This focus continues with his work with medical clerkship students and with residents. As a tenure-track clinical educator, Dr. Knutson has as a goal to develop and test innovative methods, comparing them to more traditional teaching techniques. Recently, Dr. Knutson has been named Director of the Ohio State Family Medicine Residency Program.
