We are pleased to offer this award to Masahiro Morikawa, MD, MPH. The following material presents excerpts from his letter of nomination.

Dr. Morikawa has been a stellar example of what an educator is all about since he came to his department as a resident in 1994 and graduated with high honors in 1997. He then spent one year completing an international health fellowship at Case Western Reserves University Department of Family Medicine and then joined the Department's faculty.

His passions brought unique talents to his residency through his training in Japan as a trauma surgeon. He has been working in international emergencies through various organizations. But, his strong interest in the care of compromised individuals in international health led him to obtain a Masters of Public Health degree from The Johns Hopkins University and particular focus on disaster epidemiology. His commitment to caring for individuals in need of humanitarian relief led him to seek an outlet as a Family Physician as the most appropriate avenue.

His letter of nomination describes the substantial impact Dr. Morikawa has made on his department and the school of medicine. “He has repeatedly received teacher of the year awards from the residency. He received a special award from the school of medicine for his humanitarian efforts. He has been in significant leadership positions within the department and the school, especially with his expertise in international health. He is an outstanding clinician and is the director of the department's family medicine inpatient service, which cares for the hospitalized patients. His teaching on the service is nothing less than relentless. He has perfected bedside teaching to an art. He models that family physicians can still maintain their role required in the inpatient setting. He demands nothing less than excellence and has been an inspiring model for the entire faculty.”

While remaining active as a clinician and medical educator, Dr. Morikawa has published 10 articles in refereed journals, 6 monographs or book chapters, and a host of other manuals and handbooks. He has served as an international lecturer in Honduras , Syria , Pakistan and Thailand . Dr. Morikawa's contributions have made an impact in local, regional, national and international arenas.

We are proud to recognize a Family Physician whose work reflects a commitment to excellence and who brings to life the philosophy of care and vision of Family Medicine.
