Jeffrey T. Kirchner, D.O., FAAFP
Dr. Jeffrey T. Kirchner is the
Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program of
Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster PA. He completed his
Family Medicine Residency with Abington Memorial Hospital in
Abington, PA, and completed his Rotating Internship with the
Osteopathic Medical Center of Philadelphia. Dr. Kirchner earned
his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Philadelphia College
of Osteopathic Medicine, and received a Bachelor of Science,
Biology cum laude, from Villanova University, Villanova, PA. Dr.
Kirchner holds Specialty Board Status with the American Board
of Family Medicine, Diplomat of National Board of Medical Examiners,
and the American Academy of HIV Medicine. Dr. Kirchner also holds
Medical Licensure with the state of Pennsylvania and the District
of Columbia.
Dr. Kirchner has written over 80 articles in the academic Family Medicine
area that have been published as articles, textbook chapters, and manuscripts.
Subjects covered include HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, depression in children and
adolescents, sexually transmitted diseases, Osteoporosis, women's health issues,
Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, Epilepsy in pregnancy, hearing loss,
Lyme Meningitis, Subacute Thyroiditis, pediatric infectious diseases, and many
more topics related to the practice of Family Medicine.
Dr. Kirchner also has been an Associate Editor of American Family Physician
for the past several years. He has been on the Editorial Boards of Postgraduate
Medicine, Family Medicine Recertification, Medical Aspects of Human Sexuality
and Hospital Medicine. He has been a peer reviewer for Patient Care, Consultant,
Hospital Practice, and The Lancet.
In addition to being an outstanding teacher in the Lancaster Family Medicine
Residency Program, he has taken responsibility to develop an HIV Clinic within
the Family Health Service, which is called the Comprehensive (Health) Care
Clinic (CCC). The Family Health Service is one of Lancaster's hospital-based
ambulatory care units and has received a three year $900,000.00 Ryan White
Title III Grant to expand HIV services to our community. The CCC has recently
received a very high rating from the federal government for the quality of
service being provided for these patients. The HIV program currently provides
care for almost 350 patients with HIV/AIDS, almost double since the CCC began
one year ago.
John Joseph Smucny, M.D.
Dr. Smucny is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Undergraduate
Division in the Department of Family Medicine of Upstate Medical University
in Syracuse, New York. He completed his Fellowship in 1993 with the Walter
Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington DC, completed his Residency in
1991 with the Womack Army Community Hospital, Family Medicine, in Ft. Bragg,
NC, and completed his Internship in 1989 with the Tripler Army Medical Center
in Honolulu, HI. John graduated from Case Western Reserve University Medical
School in 1988, after obtaining his Undergraduate degree in B.A., Biology,
from Amherst College in Amherst, MA.
Dr. Smucny has been very active in the
field of evidence-based medicine and has extensively published in the peer-reviewed
literature, especially in the investigation of evidence for the use of antibiotics
for the treatment of acute bronchitis. His publications include peer-reviewed
critical appraisals. He is an integral member of a team that is developing
peer-reviewed evidence reports for the United States Department of Defense
Practice Guidelines External Review Program and the United States Veteran's
Administration External Peer Review Program. To date, the clinical question
areas addressed include pregnancy, stroke, hypertension, and diabetes.
Dr. Smucny
has produced four (4) book chapters and conducted numerous peer-reviewed presentations.
He has developed and implemented Family Medicine Residency educational experiences

Dr. Smucny's teaching evaluations have consistently rated 9 out of 10 or higher.
He
has served as a Small Group Leader in the medical school's Introduction to
Clinical Medicine course and has given several large group lectures. He teaches
in the Rural Medicine Education Program, the Preventive Medicine course, and
the Family Medicine Clerkship. He also designed and taught a 6-month evening
course on Evidence-Based Medicine for volunteer Clinical Faculty.
Dr. Smucny
serves as the Undergraduate Division Director for the Department, is a member
of the University's Educational Policies Committee, and serves as an Advisory
Dean.
