2000 Mid-Career Award: Joseph Gallo, MD
Dr. Gallo received his MD degree from Pennsylvania State
University College of Medicine and completed his family medicine
residency and geriatric fellowship at the Franklin Square Hospital
in Baltimore. He also completed a two year Psychiatric Epidemiology
Fellowship at the John Hopkins University School of Hygiene and
Public Health and earned his MPH degree. In 1993, he became an
Assistant Professor in the Department of Mental Hygiene in the
School of Hygiene and Public Health at Johns Hopkins, with a joint
appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine.
Dr.
Gallo's research has focused on geriatric depression and its presentation
to primary care physicians. His research has highlighted the differential
presentation of depression in the elderly and the high level of
disability both physical and emotional that is associated with
depression. For example, his work has shown that depression is
a risk factor in the onset of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
He has also clarified the epidemiology of depression in the geriatric
age group, applying new statistical models to understand the heterogeneity
in depression presentation across age groups. His research has
received significant funding and he is now the recipient of a K23
Award and an RO1 as Principal Investigator supported by the National
Institutes of Mental Health.
As would be expected, Dr. Gallo has
published widely. His book, Handbook of Geriatric Assessment ,
is widely used, and he has numerous publications and articles in
journals such as the American Geriatric Society , Archives of General
Psychiatry , Psychological Medicine , and the Archives of Family
Medicine . He has translated his research into articles that make
the knowledge gained useful and accessible to practicing family
physicians. He also serves as Associate Editor for the Archives
of Family Medicine. |
