Deborah R. Erlich, MD has always lived in the Northeast, including several moves through New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, and has lived in Cambridge and Boston for the last 11 years. She earned her bachelor's in psychology at Harvard and wrote a thesis on perceptions of race. After college, she worked at Massachusetts General Hospital's Cancer Center before matriculating at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, where she embraced Family Medicine and medical education. During medical school, she volunteered at and helped manage a free clinic, sat on the curriculum committee, took a medical education course, taught first- and second-year students, and completed elective rotations in San Francisco, Israel, and England, where she got along in Spanish, Hebrew, and "British." After attending STFM Northeast Meetings during her second and third years of medical school, Deb helped plan the meeting during her fourth year as the only student on the Host Committee. She is now a happy third-year resident at Tufts University Family Medicine Residency at Cambridge Health Alliance in Malden, Massachusetts. She serves as the national Resident Representative to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)'s Family Medicine Residency Review Committee (RRC).
Locally, she volunteers on her institution's Graduate Medical Education Committee and spends her elective time teaching medical students. Her clinical interests include child/adolescent medicine, women's health, skin care, and preventive medicine; after residency she hopes to pursue an academic fellowship in faculty development. Her husband Jason trained in anesthesiology and is now completing a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine.
Congratulations, Dr. Erlich!

Jennifer L. Middleton, MD, MPH received her medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and did her residency training at the UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program. She went on to complete a two-year faculty development fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Family Medicine, and she joined the UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program faculty in the fall of 2008.
While she was a faculty development fellow, Dr. Middleton obtained her Master in Public Health degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She became especially interested in health behavior theory during this time and developed a new model describing hypertension treatment behavior in African-Americans. For this work, she was awarded the William T. Green, Jr. Award in Public Health Studies.
Also while a fellow, Dr. Middleton teamed up with Dr. Timothy Wallace, then a UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine resident, to create a patient education series that aired locally on public access television. The scripts for “White Coats” integrated health behavior theory concepts into an accessible and fun television format; the show featured two fictional family physicians who, in moments both humorous and serious, taught their patients about health while promoting Family Medicine. Along with Dr. Wallace, Dr. Middleton was a co-winner of the 2006 Visual Arts in Family Medicine Award for “White Coats,” and she is currently the principal investigator of a randomized controlled trial, funded by the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, that is testing the effectiveness of this novel health education format.
Dr. Middleton's current faculty responsibilities at UPMC St. Margaret include the “White Coats” research study, administrative and patient care duties as the assistant medical director for one of the program‟s Family Health Centers, and regular outpatient precepting and inpatient supervision of Family Medicine residents and students. As the Director of Practice Improvement for the residency, she also creates and implements on-going Electronic Health Record instruction for residents and faculty.
Dr. Middleton additionally enjoys writing and editing medical literature. She has published in a wide variety of formats, ranging from narrative essays to original research, in Journal of the American Medical Association, Annals of Family Medicine, Family Medicine, Journal of the National Medical Association, and Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine. The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians recently invited her to participate on their expert panel exploring treatment-resistant hypertension, and a resulting NJAFP CME monograph is currently in press.
Congratulations, Dr. Middleton!
