Dr. O’Donovan is a graduate of New York University with a degree in medieval and renaissance studies. She had a successful career as a high school teacher before returning to medicine and earning a Masters of Public Health from Harvard University. She then attended the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and completed her residency training in family medicine at Boston University. She is currently practicing as a National Health Service Corps scholar for Unity Health Care Inc. and the Washington D.C. Department of Corrections.
Dr. O’Donovan was nominated for this award by her Residency Director Tom Hines, M.D. He writes that Dr. O’Donovan is “the finest combination of resident clinician, educator, and leader that I have encountered in my 9 years at Boston University, a time in which I truly believe that I have met some of the best and brightest of the upcoming generation of family physicians.” He comments on her mature and balanced approach to clinical care, well developed communication skills, and enthusiasm and work ethic. He feels Dr. O’Donovan will “certainly be one of family medicine’s leaders for her generation.”
Dr. O’Donovan’s career accomplishments to date include serving as a Boston Schweitzer Fellow, student chair of Students for Choice, a health policy internship in the office of Senator Ted Kennedy, time at the Robert Graham Center in Washington D.C., and founding a Centering Pregnancy group prenatal visit program. She was a 2004 Pisacano Leadership Foundation Scholar.

Dr. Olayiwola is a graduate of The Ohio State University and the Ohio State University & Cleveland Clinic Foundation School of Medicine. She completed her residency in family medicine at Columbia University in New York. She subsequently earned a Masters of Public Health at Harvard University. She is currently Medical Director of Community Health Center, Incorporated in Meriden, Connecticut and holds an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Olayiwola was nominated for this award by Pablo Joo, M.D., Director of Pre-Doctoral Education at Columbia University. He comments on her strong leadership skills and ability to move an agenda forward. He views her as “a natural leader with the potential to be a pioneer in family medicine and community health at the community, national, and global levels.”
Dr. Olayiwola’s career accomplishments to date include selection as Chief Resident, service on numerous committees and advisory boards, and founding “Girl Talk, Incorporated,” (Girls in Real Life Tackling a Livid Killer: Minority Girls Talk Back to HIV/AIDS.) She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the prestigious Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Affairs, the Excellence in Medical Leadership Award from the American Medical Association, the Resident Teacher Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and selection as one of America’s Top Docs 2007.

Dr. Perkins is a graduate of the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania and the MCP Hahneman University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She completed her residency in family medicine and a fellowship in obstetrics at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore. She is currently enrolled in a faculty development fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She currently holds appointments as a full time faculty member at the Franklin Square Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program and as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Perkins was nominated for this award by her Residency Director at Franklin Square Sallie Rixie, M.D. She comments on her passion and energy and describes her as “brilliant and gutsy yet humble and kind,” and “full of joy, appreciation, and curiosity.” She describes how Dr. Perkins “seizes the bull by the horns and works diligently to improve things” and feels she has great potential for future leadership in our specialty. She particularly notes the impact Dr. Perkins has had in building strong relationships between the Departments of Obstetrics and Family Medicine.
Dr. Perkins’ career accomplishments to date include receiving the University of Maryland Medical Student Teaching Award in obstetrics, serving as Chief Resident, an unprecedented 3 terms as the Maryland resident delegate to the national Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Students, and receiving the AAFP Foundation Resident Research Grant.
