2005 Emerging Leaders Award

Each year the Family Medicine Education Consortium invites residency directors and chairs of departments of Family Medicine to nominate residents or junior faculty who they believe have strong leadership potential. A review panel composed of FMEC Board members reviews the nominees selecting the top 3 to 5 for this award. We believe that these Family Physicians will influence the future of health care in their communities and in the nation. The 2005 award winners are (in alphabetical order):

Dr. Coren received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University in 1997. Both his Master of Business Administration degree in Health and Medical Services in 2000 and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2002 were completed in a joint program between Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Saint Joseph’s University.  He completed his internship and residency serving as chief intern and resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine, specializing in Family Medicine.

Dr. Coren joined the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM) in July of 2005 as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine.  At UMDNJ-SOM, Dr. Coren is the medical director of the Mount Laurel Family Medicine office where he cares for patients from the pediatric to geriatric population and frequently incorporates osteopathic manipulative medicine.  Dr. Coren also organizes, teaches and precepts for the third year family medicine clerkship as Course Co-Director at UMDNJ-SOM.  

Dr. Coren is an active member of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, (ACOFP), where he served as Chair of the Intern and Resident Committee from 2002-2004, Resident Academic Board Member from 2004-2005, Vice Chair of the Young Physician’s Committee from 2005-2006 and actively participated on many other ACOFP committees.  He is also a member of the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons and served as Resident Director for the Board from 2004-2005.

Adam Dimitrov, MD currently serves as the Director of Undergraduate Clinical Education for the Department of Family Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, the same program from which he graduated last year as Chief Resident.  He is also undergoing a Fellowship in Primary Care Faculty Development at Michigan State University (OMERAD).  Adam is one of the coordinators for the AAFP/MAFP Mentorship Pilot Program which aims to recruit more medical students into family medicine.  

His academic interests include complementary and alternative medicine, effective teaching techniques, and the effects of video games on health.  Adam lives with his wife, Lauren, and two cats, Mustachio and Sage.  Adam (and his cats) enjoy watching football on Sundays and playing...or rather researching...video games during his free time.

Steve is the Director of School Based Programs and a clinical instructor at the University of Rochester’s Department of Family Medicine.  He is also an Adolescent Medicine Fellow at the University of Rochester and is pursuing a Masters of Public Health degree.  

Steve founded and directs a school-based training program where family medicine residents spend two half days per week teaching good health practices in classrooms and doing ADHD assessments as a part of their ambulatory pediatrics experience. Additionally, he developed the Rochester Summer Health Externship Program, which places high school seniors in a variety of health professions to encourage talented, socio-economically disadvantaged youth to pursue health careers. Steve is a former Teach for America Corps Member and is interested in strengthening the relationships between families, schools, and medical providers as a means of improving outcomes for students.  His MPH thesis is focused on risk and protective factors surrounding adolescent fatherhood.

Steve and his wife Jen Larson, MD (a geriatrician) are currently surviving the first months of parenthood with their son Eli.  They will be moving to Jen’s hometown of Spruce Pine, NC in September of 2006.

Stacey Robert, MD, currently serves as Assistant Program Director at York Hospital Family Medicine Residency in York, Pennsylvania.   Stacey is a full spectrum family physician educator.  She has involved herself in and contributes to all of the major operations of the program.  She has well honed organizational skills and applies them to problem solving with much independence.  Additionally, she has participated in education initiatives for domestic violence awareness and initiatives for eradication and smoking prevention through “Tar Wars” presentations.

Stacey has a highly developed social conscience and has made impressive contributions to the care of indigent and underserved citizens in her community.  She is the medical director of WellSpan’s Health Connect van.  (WellSpan is York Hospital’s corporate entity).  This mobile office serves York and Adams County patients who have no or limited access to patient care.  The medical office literally goes to them.  The van services large pockets of Hispanic patients and Stacey’s fluency in Spanish enables her to deliver quality service to those who speak Spanish.

Dr. Robert is passionate about resident education, patient care and making the world a better place.  She seeks excellence in her work and is truly exceptional in her vision and ability to identify needs.
