Dr. Montegut received his Bachelor's degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, in 1973. He then attended the Universite de Lausanne Faculte de Medecine in Lausanne, Switzerland, and received his Medical Degree from the UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California, in 1977. He completed his residency in 1980 at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island/Brown University, Program in Family Medicine in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He holds certifications from the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Family Medicine.
Prior to coming to the Residency Program at Maine Medical Center, Dr. Montegut practiced rural medicine in the small town of Topsham, Maine, for many years. Many of his patients followed him to Portland when he joined the Maine Medical Center program as their Residency Director. In this role, he has instituted many curriculum improvements, being on the cutting edge of Competency Based Education. He challenges those in his department to continually improve their teaching and clinical skills, with a constant focus on the patient, on continuity, and on appropriate recognition of personal relationships in clinical expertise.
Dr. Montegut works actively to be conscious of his effect on both his patients and his colleagues, promoting and demonstrating conscious leadership skills in his work within the department, in AAFP, in international family medicine, and most recently, his appointment to the Board of Directors of the American Board of Family Medicine. He routinely mentors junior faculty, focusing on their academic skills, whether it be placing academic competency within faculty measurements, or by actively mentoring one faculty member through their first publication. He creates opportunities for his faculty to become leaders and supports them along the way with his time, energy, and moral encouragement.
Community service, policy development and advocacy are exemplified through his work in the state and national AAFP organizations and through his international work. His wisdom, diplomatic expertise and nerves of steel allow him to succeed in so many areas including the development of five new Family Medicine Departments in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Thai Nguyen, Can Tho, and Hue, Vietnam. His international team is currently working on developing several rural training sites around Hue, Vietnam and two rural sites in Lao. The development of social work, bachelor, master, and doctoral level training programs in Vietnam is a direct result of the family medicine project, his mentorship and guidance.
In 2005, Dr. Montegut received a grant for $500,000 for the creation of a national Faculty Development Center at the Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi, Vietnam.
Dr. Montegut and his wife, Kathleen, have two children, Sara and Daniel. Dr. Montegut volunteers at the Oasis Free Clinic in Brunswick, Maine, as a volunteer physician. He enjoys hiking, canoeing, fishing and skiing.
Dr. Alain Montegut was nominated for this award by Julie Schirmer, LCSW, Director, Behavioral Medicine; Christina Holt, MD, Research Director; and John Hatzenbuchler, MD, Residency Physician, who are all associated with the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
